Theme: Transportation
Action: Bike to work.
Things that might stop you from taking action:
- You don’t own a bike! New bikes are too expensive!
- Riding on the road scares you.
- You don’t have the proper gear – helmet, rain gear, clothing
- There’s nowhere safe to lock up your bike at work. You worry someone will steal you bike.
- Biking every day is too tiring!
Ways to overcome the obstacles:
- Buy a used/second-hand bike – check out Craigslist or a local bike store (insert list here)
- Look at a city map for side-streets to take. Learn about your rights as a biker. Learn the rules of the road relating to bikes and cars. Watch the video on riding in traffic
- Make the initial investment to have comfortable clothing and proper safety gear. Second-hand gear could be found as well on Craigslist. MEC also sells a wide variety of bike gear suited to all price levels.
- Talk to your employer about getting a secure bike storage area. Buy a heavy duty lock. Watch the video on safely securing your bike.
- Start biking once a week, on days with nice weather. Then gradually increase to 2 or 3 times a week.
