Biography

Janet Eaton is volunteer trade and environment campaigner for Sierra Club Canada. She is a biologist, community and adult educator and a well-known critic of globalization and free trade. In her role as an educator, Janet has taught courses on globalization, environmental sustainability and community political power.

Janet is a founding member of Sierra Club Canada's Atlantic Chapter and has been a volunteer with SCC for over ten years. She has worked as an international liaison for SCC on Water Privatization and Corporate accountability issues and currently works in the Atlantic region on free trade issues where she represents SCC on the Nova Scotia Trading Options coalition.

Nationally, Janet is SCC's representative on Common Frontiers, a forum for national groups that work throughout the Americas on free trade and economic alternatives. She also represents SCC on the Steering Committee of a new coalition of multiple national groups that have recently come together to expose concerns with CETA, the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. Under CETA, transnational corporations could challenge public services and legislation as unfair "barriers" to trade in a wide range of areas, including copyright and internet law, water services and environmental protection.

Janet has a BSc in Biology from Acadia University and a PhD in Marine Biology from Dalhousie University, Halifax. She attributes her background in biology, and her later involvement with the International Systems Institute as major influences in helping her to better envision possibilities for whole system change. She believes that the challenges facing humanity - global climate change, the end of peak oil, the failures of "free market" economies and the near collapse of so many ecosystems - demand systemic thinking and new approaches to problem solving.
